4 things retailers don’t want you to know about Black Friday

Like the arrival of Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve, each year retailers deliver a host of deals, discounts and freebies for shoppers as part of a highly anticipated shopping event called Black Friday, which falls on the day after Thanksgiving.

Are you really getting the best deal?
Many of the deals are legitimate bargains, but others are nothing more than ordinary sales wrapped in shiny packaging. How can you tell the difference? We have the secrets you need to know about the annual discount shopping bonanza, which this year is Nov. 25.

1. Doorbusters are few and far between
Doorbusters are the blockbusters of Black Friday. They’re deeply discounted products that are available for only a limited window of time — usually on Thanksgiving Day or Black Friday. The products look good, and the prices certainly sound good, but the reality of actually getting your hands on one of these items isn’t so rosy.

In 2015, for instance, Sears plastered a Kenmore Elite washer and dryer on the front page of its Black Friday ad, with the promise of 51% off on the pair. But the fine print below the deal revealed that there were approximately only four available per store.

The story is similar at other retailers. If you don’t secure a spot at the front of the line or log online the moment a sale starts, you could miss your shot at these big deals. Shoppers should look for stores with doorbuster guarantees. In some cases, as long as you arrive at a certain time, you can be guaranteed the low price.

2. Discounts are often inflated
Deals can be difficult to grab, but they can also be misleading. Last year, a NerdWallet study found that major department stores inflated the amount of some of their Black Friday discounts to make deals appear better than they actually were.

For instance, depending on where you shopped, the same-priced coffee maker could have looked like a better bargain. The Keurig K45 Elite Single-Serve Coffee or Tea Brewing System was on sale for $89.99 at Macy’s and Kohl’s during Black Friday 2015 and for $89.98 at Stage. But each of these retailers advertised a different regular retail price: $174.99 for Macy’s, $149.99 for Kohl’s and $119.98 for Stage. If you shopped at Macy’s, it looked like you were saving $85, but at Kohl’s, it appeared you were saving only $60 — despite the fact that the product was on sale for the identical price.

If you shop this year on Black Friday, don’t pay attention to the supposed percentage of the discounts. Instead, judge the value of a product based on the sale price and how it compares with the item’s price at other stores.

3. Price matching may be exempt
Price matching is a common practice that allows customers to show retailers proof of a lower price elsewhere on an identical product and ask the store to match that competitor’s price.

But many retailers suspend their price-matching policies on Black Friday. At Target, “Price matching and adjustments will not be allowed for prices from Thanksgiving Day through the end of the following week, whether offered by Target or a competitor. Exclusion dates are November 24 through December 3.”

Similarly, Wal-Mart’s policy reads, “Walmart.comwill not price match items on Walmart.com or to other retailers between Thanksgiving and Cyber-Monday,” which this year is Nov. 28. On Black Friday 2015, Wal-Mart stores would match the price of any local competitor’s ad for an identical product, but some exclusions applied.

When price matching is largely off the table, it’s up to the shopper to compare prices and research which store has the best offer.

4. Fine print is everywhere
Finally, even if you manage to avoid all of the above tricks and traps, you could still be faced with more fine print. Retailers have a way of making some sales difficult to actually claim.

Certain deals may require completion of a mail-in rebate. Other products are available at their advertised sale price only for a few hours and then go up in price. Keep an eye out for such fine print and exclusions — usually located at the bottom of a Black Friday ad or beneath individual deals within the ad — so you aren’t surprised when you get to the store on Black Friday.

Former Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard has retired, ending a 19-year playing career

Gerrard, 36, played 710 times for the Reds, winning nine trophies, but joined MLS side LA Galaxy in 2015.

The midfielder is England's fourth most-capped player with 114 appearances and captained the side at three of the six major tournaments he played at.

"I feel lucky to have experienced so many wonderful highlights over the course of my career," said Gerrard.

"I have had an incredible career and am thankful for each and every moment of my time at Liverpool, England and LA Galaxy.

"I fulfilled my childhood dream by pulling on the famous red shirt of Liverpool."

Gerrard had been linked with the manager's job at League One side MK Dons after announcing he would leave LA Galaxy, but said on Wednesday the opportunity came "too soon" for him.

Gerrard, who is working towards his Uefa A coaching licence - the second-highest qualification available, has also been linked withmoves to Celtic and Newcastle United, as well as a return to Anfield as a coach.

On Thursday, he said he will take time to consider his options before making an announcement "very soon", adding: "I am excited about the future and feel I still have a lot to offer the game, in whatever capacity that may be."

Klopp says Liverpool 'door open'
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp played down talk of Gerrard returning to the Premier League club in a coaching role, and said he should be given "room and space to jump in and learn something new".

"When something is announced then we will talk," said the German, who became Reds boss in October 2015. "It is clear that one day in the future there will be something to announce, that is pretty sure too, but until then there is nothing to say.

"The first thing you should all learn is that, if someone wants to help Steven Gerrard, stop being so excited about each step he is doing next.

"The door is always open for him. From our side, if he wants to make a different career to his former career then we want to help him.

"There is nothing else to say - but maybe that is already too much."

Danny Murphy told BBC Sport his former Liverpool team-mate could consider coaching the Reds' youth players.

"I think it'll be a hugely positive step to learn from Klopp at a club he loves," said the 39-year-old.

"The only difficulty might be the dynamic that creates. To go in as a coach and work around Jurgen and his team, somebody in a job might have to step aside. Maybe to go in as the under-21 or under-18 coach and learn his trade that way might be an option.

"Somewhere down the line, he will be back at Liverpool."

'Proud to captain Liverpool'
Gerrard was made Liverpool captain by Gerard Houllier in 2003, and led the side to Champions League success in 2005, scoring the Reds' first goal as they recovered from 3-0 down at half-time to beat AC Milan on penalties in the Istanbul final.

"I am proud to have played over 700 games for Liverpool, many of which as captain, and to have played my part in helping the club to bring major honours back to Anfield, none more so than that famous night in Istanbul," he added.

"I feel privileged to have won 114 England caps and to have had the honour of captaining my country."

While the Champions League success is surely the highlight of Gerrard's Liverpool career, he also helped his boyhood club win two FA Cups, three League Cups, a Uefa Cup and a Uefa Super Cup.

"I was lucky to play alongside some great players and under some fantastic managers during my time at Anfield and would like to thank each and every one of them, as well as all of the backroom staff at the club throughout my time there for the fantastic support they showed me," he added.

Gerrard and England

Gerrard scored his first England goal in the 5-1 win over Germany in September 2001

Gerrard made his England debut against Ukraine in 2000 and scored his first international goal in a 5-1 win in Germany in a World Cup qualifier the following year.

Fabio Capello was the first England manager to make Gerrard his captain in 2008, but it was not until 2010 that he took on the role on a more permanent basis when he stood in for the injured Rio Ferdinand at the World Cup.

Gerrard kept the captaincy for Euro 2012, the year in which he won his 100th England cap, before announcing his retirement from international duty after a group-stage exit at the 2014 World Cup.

Where does Gerrard rank in Liverpool history?
Four of the 10 major finals Gerrard contested went to penalties and Liverpool won all of them

In 2015, 10 years on from that famous win in Istanbul, Liverpool fans voted Gerrard the best player in the club's history.

Gerrard, who scored 186 goals for the Anfield club, endeared himself to supporters with heroic performances such as in Istanbul and in the Reds' FA Cup final win over West Ham a year later.

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson says only former Scotland forward Kenny Dalglish was better.

"I think he is Liverpool's second best player behind Kenny Dalglish. There were 10 or 12 years where Steven, in any outfield position for Liverpool, would have been the best player in the team," said Lawrenson.

"A one-club man who was the scorer of great goals, a great passer and a player who drove the team on. Take Gerrard and Dalglish out of any side and it would be completely different."

Premier League legend?
Gerrard kissed the TV camera on two occasions when celebrating at Old Trafford, where he scored five times for Liverpool

Gerrard may have never won the Premier League, with Liverpool finishing second in the table on three occasions, but the midfielder boasts some of the competition's most impressive statistics.

Even in 2013-14 - the season of the infamous 'slip' against Chelsea at Anfield, when Liverpool eventually finished runners-up to Manchester City - Gerrard contributed 13 goals and the same amount of assists.

Only two players have made more appearances for a single club in the competition - Ryan Giggs (632) and Jamie Carragher (508) - with the Anfield stalwart making the PFA Premier League team of the year in eight of his 17 seasons at the club.

His place in Anfield folklore was only strengthened on the back of impressive performances against Liverpool's rivals, netting 10 goals in all competitions in Merseyside derbies against Everton, including a hat-trick in March 2012.

Analysis
Phil McNulty, BBC Sport's chief football writer:

Steven Gerrard belongs in football's elite for his feats, a towering, iconic figure who many regard as Liverpool's greatest player after a 17-year Anfield career.

Gerrard, often single-handedly, inspired Liverpool as the club's domestic supremacy waned, most famously in the dramatic Champions League final win against AC Milan on penalties in Istanbul in 2005 after Rafael Benitez's side came from 3-0 down at half-time.

He became a shining symbol for the club and its supporters with 186 goals in 710 appearances, also winning two FA Cups, the Uefa Cup and three League Cups as the title consistently eluded Liverpool.

Gerrard suffered agony as well as ecstasy at Liverpool and his slip against Chelsea at Anfield when they looked certain to win the Premier League in 2014 will surely haunt him - but no-one associated with the club would ever hold that against a magnificent player who was a loyal, inspirational leader and personality throughout his career.

He may not have hit those heights with England as a string of major tournaments produced disappointment, but he was not alone among Premier League greats in that regard and always served his country, many times as captain, with distinction.

The banner held aloft at his final Anfield game against Crystal Palace on 16 May, 2015 echoed the feelings of many Liverpool fans: "The Best There Is. The Best There Was. And The Best There Will Ever Be."

Snow Falls in November in Tokyo for First Time in 54 Years

Tokyo residents woke up Thursday to the first November snowfall in more than 50 years. And the Japan Meteorological Agency said it was the first time fallen snow on the ground was observed in November since such records started to be taken in 1875.

An unusually cold air mass brought wet snow to Japan's capital. Above-freezing temperatures kept the snow from sticking in most places, though it did accumulate on sidewalks and cars in Tokyo's far western suburbs.

Meteorologists forecast up to 2 centimeters (1 inch) would fall, and more in the mountains northwest of Tokyo.
The snow caused minor train delays during the morning commute.
The last time it snowed in central Tokyo in November was 1962.

Prior to Thursday, the earliest time that snow had accumulated on the ground in the winter season was on Dec. 6, 1987, according to the agency.
[ads-post]
The agency monitors various esoteric weather indicators, Japanese-style, such as announcing when cherry blossoms have started to bloom by observing a certain tree.
The benchmark "sakura" tree for Tokyo grows in Yasukuni Shrine, which has drawn controversy because it honors all Japanese soldiers who died in war, including war criminals.

The first snowfall is "hatsuyuki," which literally translated to "first snow." Snow on the ground is called "sekisetsu," and declared when more than half a designated area in Tokyo, called Kitanomaru, turns white, the agency said.
Japanese culture is especially sensitive to the changing seasons. Haiku, for instance, must include words that denote spring, summer, fall or winter.

France: World should stop turning a blind eye to Syria

France has accused Syria and its allies of using political uncertainty in the United States to launch "total war" against opposition-held areas in the country and called for new sanctions on Bashar al-Assad's government for the use of chemical weapons.

Making the accusations after a weekly cabinet session on Wednesday, Jean-Marc Ayrault, France's foreign minister, said that countries opposed to the Syrian president would meet soon.

Donald Trump's inauguration as the new US president will not happen until January 20 next year and President Barack Obama's outgoing administration is not expected to take an active role in Syria so close to leaving office.

European diplomats have expressed concern that Assad may feel emboldened by Trump's pledge to build closer ties with Russia, Syria's ally.

"Today one million people are besieged, not just in Aleppo, but in Homs, Ghouta and Idlib, and that's the reality of the situation in Syria," Ayrault said in Paris.

He did not say what the planned meeting might achieve, but said protecting Syrian civilians was an urgent priority.

"France is taking the initiative to confront this strategy of total war by the regime and its allies, who are taking advantage of the current uncertainty in the United States."

Meeting planned
The proposed meeting of countries opposed to Assad, including the US, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, will take place in the near future in Paris, Ayrault said.

France, a staunch backer of the anti-Assad opposition, is now actively pushing for a UN Security Council resolution to sanction Syria for the use of chemical weapons, he said.
Syria: 'All Aleppo hospitals destroyed'

An inquiry by the United Nations and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons has already found that government forces were responsible for three chlorine gas attacks and that the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group had used mustard gas.

"It's been proved that the regime and ISIL have used chemical weapons, so we now need sanctions and that's the resolution we want at the UN. The international community must stop turning a blind eye," Ayrault said.

"We aren't going to sit and do nothing."

Russia has said that the inquiry's findings cannot be used to take action at the Security Council and that the Syrian government, which denies using chemical weapons, should investigate the accusations.

Meanwhile, on the ground, doctors and activists in Syria are calling on the international community to airdrop supplies in opposition-held eastern Aleppo.

They are also calling for  a safe passage for civilians, and want the UN to monitor it.

At least 13 people were killed in fighting in Aleppo on Wednesday, according to rescue workers.

They said  they have been trying to recover the injured, but there are no hospitals left to take them to following Syrian government's latest assault on medical facilities in opposition-held areas.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that dozens of civilians tried to flee the besieged parts of Aleppo on Wednesday but were stopped from escaping because of fighting.

On Tuesday, the Syrian army issued a statement accusing opposition fighters of holding civilians as "hostages".

"Permit those citizens who want to do so to leave, stop using them as hostages and human shields, clear the mines from the crossings identified by the state," it said.

Anti-government groups deny they are preventing civilians from leaving and accused the government of spreading "rumours".

Renewed assault
The Syrian army - backed by allied forces from Iran, Russia and the Lebanese group Hezbollah - launched a renewed assault on east Aleppo on November 15.

The offensive has killed at least 143 civilians in the city's east, among them 19 children, and more than 375 in all of Aleppo province.

Opposition fire has killed 16 civilians in the government-held west, including 10 children.
The Syrian conflict has killed an estimated 400,000 people since it began in March 2011.

"Kok begitu si Buni Yani menghilangkan kata 'pakai'?

Sebelumnya, Kepala Divisi HumasPolriIrjen (Pol) Boy Rafli Amar mengatakan Buni Yani, pengunggah video Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) terkait surat Al Maidah ayat 51 ke media sosial, berpotensi menjadi tersangka.

Mantan Jubir Gus Dur: Hukum Salah, Jika Ahok Dinyatakan Bersalah

Demo 4 November Ricuh, NasDem Desak Fadli Zon-Fahri Hamzah Diperiksa

Ketua Dewan Pimpinan Pusat Partai NasDem Irma Suryani Chaniago meminta Kepolisian Negara Republik Indonesia memeriksa dua Wakil Ketua Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Fadli Zon dan Fahri Hamzah.

"Jangan cuma cari panggung," ujarnya, Sabtu, 5 November 2016.

Aksi berjalan damai hingga selepas magrib. Hampir lima jam setelah demonstrasi menjadi ricuh, Presiden Joko Widodo melakukan konferensi pers.
